Chad Wilson – Editor – GridironStuds Blog<\/strong> It’s camp season and it’s also 7-on-7 season.\u00a0 Along with the high speed athletic workouts and amazing physical feats comes a ton of disappointment.\u00a0 Camps pick MVPs,\u00a0 they hand out invites to bigger camps and 7-on-7 teams have tryouts.\u00a0 With that being the case, a lot of prospects are going to fail to hear their name called and fall short of their goals.<\/p>\n When you are young and full of testosterone,\u00a0 admitting failure is hard.\u00a0 Accepting it is even harder.\u00a0 One of the most common ways we cope with failure as human beings is by criticizing the system.\u00a0 Nothing soothes us more than by making our failure the result of being cheated by those running the show.\u00a0 Perhaps the temporary relief of calling out the short comings of others can keep our egos from being eternally bruised but there’s a danger in extending our arms to finger point.<\/p>\n Finger pointing can become a nasty habit that eventually preps you for failure in almost every big time situation.\u00a0 Over time you can enter every big competition waiting to get “cheated” so you can be ready to not be harmed mentally by the failure.\u00a0 You don’t need me to tell you that this is a “weak” mentality.\u00a0 Most of you will say that you never act like that and most of you would be lying.\u00a0 As we grow older,\u00a0 most of us tend to come to grips with our shortcomings.\u00a0 Through this enlightenment we either do the work we need to do to change them or we learn how to get by in life despite them.\u00a0 Here’s the hard thing about this when it comes to football,\u00a0 it’s a young man’s game.\u00a0 Football is not going to wait for you to get to 40 years old and figure this out.\u00a0 By then you don’t move as fast,\u00a0 you are not as energetic and your knees hurt.\u00a0 So this article is here for you to think like a 40 year old in a young man’s body.<\/p>\n Having worked many football combines, camps and coaching on South Florida Express’ 7-on-7 team for five years,\u00a0 I heard time and again, “they already had their guys picked before we got out there.”\u00a0 I would hear this coming from guys who had zero chance of making the team based on their skill level.\u00a0 They would not have made the team if they were the only one at the tryout.\u00a0 With that mentality,\u00a0 they won’t make the team next year.\u00a0 Why? Because their thought process won’t bring them back bigger, stronger and more skillful next season.\u00a0 They already have their excuse ready.<\/p>\n Here’s the truth of the matter.\u00a0 Combines, camps and tryouts already have a list of guys that they know or have reason to believe are great players.\u00a0 Right or wrong,\u00a0 certainly players have attained a certain level of notoriety and status.\u00a0 Some may have had great seasons,\u00a0 may be already ranked or quite honestly,\u00a0 they “look” like great players.\u00a0 The people running the camps and tryouts have to have an idea going in as to who the top players may be.\u00a0 You simply can not evaluate everyone based on one day of competition.\u00a0 Imagine you have a tryout and Julio Jones is off of his game that day for some reason.\u00a0 Do you ignore everything he’s done up to that point and leave him off of the roster?\u00a0 How many people will call you stupid?\u00a0 How would you feel if another team picks him up and uses him to beat you?\u00a0 Imagine if we all judged Tom Brady off of this last Super Bowl?\u00a0 Would we have missed the mark?\u00a0 Of course we would have.<\/p>\n So here’s the deal,\u00a0 when you enter a camp or tryout without the big name,\u00a0 you have to perform on that day.\u00a0 Being lights out still may not get you on the team or picked as a MVP but you have no chance at all if you don’t perform on that day.\u00a0 Sure,\u00a0 you may have outperformed Bill Five Star on that day but remember,\u00a0 he already had a resume coming in.\u00a0 On any given day Josh Rosen can out perform Aaron Rogers in a single game but what about over the course of a season?<\/p>\n If you perform well and don’t make the cut,\u00a0 chances are that you got someone’s attention.\u00a0 Take the failure and internalize it.\u00a0 Go home and get faster.\u00a0 Hit the weight room and get stronger,\u00a0 get in the film room and get wiser.\u00a0 Get on the field and get more skillful.\u00a0 Show up next year as the improved you.\u00a0 When you come through the gate,\u00a0 that coach will remember you from last year and puts a star next to your name on his list.\u00a0 That means he’s going to watch you more today than he will the other 7,985 prospects at the camp.\u00a0 When you unleash your improved skills from last year,\u00a0 that coach is going to go to bat for you.\u00a0 \u00a0Now you’ve become that guy that the others will hate on because you got picked before you even got out there.<\/p>\n Successful people internalize their failures and seek opportunities to point the finger at others when they achieve success..\u00a0 Who do you want to be?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Chad Wilson – Editor – GridironStuds Blog Twitter: @GridironStuds It’s camp season and it’s also 7-on-7 season.\u00a0 Along<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":44,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,767],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3716","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-high-school","category-recruiting-school"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3716","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/44"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=3716"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3716\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3716"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=3716"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/gridironstuds.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=3716"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
